Description
A genuinely rare and historic piece — the “Horse” One Pice coin was the very first 1 Pice coin issued by Republic India, struck between 1950 and 1955. The obverse features the iconic Ashoka Lion Capital with the legend “GOVERNMENT OF INDIA”, while the reverse depicts a beautifully detailed prancing horse facing left. This marked the transition from British-era coinage to independent India’s new monetary system, where the king’s bust was replaced by the Ashoka Lion Capital, with One Pice as the lowest denomination (4 Pice = 1 Anna). These coins were demonetized on 4 January 1957, making surviving examples increasingly scarce. A wonderful bundle of 5 mixed-year coins (1950–1955) representing the birth of independent India’s currency — perfect for collectors and history enthusiasts.
