Description
A captivating piece of colonial Southeast Asian history — this 1 Piastre note was issued by the Banque de l’Indochine, established in Paris on 21 January 1875 to administer France’s colonial territories across Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The obverse features a young local woman in traditional costume with the Tomb of Emperor Minh Mang in the background — a 19th-century Vietnamese king known for his resistance to French rule. The reverse depicts a young peasant in a traditional hat carrying a yoke of coconut baskets, with water buffaloes grazing nearby. The watermark features Mercury, the Roman god of commerce. A beautifully detailed and historically rich note, perfect for collectors of colonial banknotes and Southeast Asian history
